September Sew and Share

What have CAMQG members been up to over the past month?  Check out the Sew and Share summary below:

Debbie made a new quilt for her granddaughter who just started going to preschool from a fabric line called Kinder. She says she got the idea from Instagram.  It is finished with straight line quilting.

When Debbie turned 60 two years ago people in her family gave her a yard of Kona cotton.  She has a relationship with each of the people who picked out the colors, so that’s how the colors for this quilt were selected.  On the back each person who gave her a yard of fabric has a wonky star.  MaryEllen did the quilting.

MaryEllen said that the York Guild is having a stocking challenge, where you make stocking and fill them with personal care items for veterans.  She has made two stockings so far – and her feedback is that she doesn’t like the one that she did with metallic thread because the thread kept breaking!

Lois created a cat from a Laura Heine after she saw another member, Melanie, create a different pattern by the same designer.

The second quilt Lois shared was made from Kaffe Fasset fabrics.  We were so impressed how she used the leftovers on the back to make it just as stunning as the front!

Sigrid jumped on the jelly roll rug bandwagon.  She said it was fun to make, but it was the only thing that she made all summer.

Maike said that she didn't have anything new to show, but she did just make her nametag!

Beth made a quilt for her niece from layer cakes and a free pattern called Auntie’s Diamonds from Moda Bakeshop.  It has minky on the back and no batting, making the drape of the quilt really nice.

Melanie shared two table runners - one that she pieced using a quilt-as-you-go method from a kit purchased just ten days ago at the Quilt Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.  She showed another that her mother started in a class and she gave to Melanie to quilt.

Modern Improvisational Piecing Workshop with Beth Reese

On Saturday, September 22, CAMQG held a Modern Improvisational Piecing Workshop led by our very own Beth Reese.  Twelve members of CAMQG gathered to learn and sew the day away.

Beth led us through the creation of blocks such as Shifty Strips, Positive Addition, Daring Diamonds and Twin Peaks.  Everyone had fun letting go of our inner perfectionists and just having fun with the improvisational techniques.

The group enjoyed a delicious fried chicken lunch organized by Donna, and the cookies lasted throughout the afternoon.

We delighted in seeing how everyone's blocks came together - they all looked so different with the varying fabric selections and placement of light and darks.  The day sped by!

September Meeting

The September meeting of CAMQG was held on September 18, 2018 in the community rooms of the Camp Hill Giant.  You can find the meeting minutes here

The program was conducted by Karen, who demonstrated how to transform striped fabric into dynamic blocks. By the end of the evening we were itching to go home and dig out all the striped fabric out of our stashes.  Special thanks to Karen for sharing this neat technique!
