February 2020

Check out what we did at this month's meeting at this link to February meeting minutes.

Cordell brought a jacket she sewed with elephant batik fabric a friend brought from Tanzania.  She brought it because she quilted it, and that qualified it as a quilted item.

The jacket is made from Butterick pattern 6293, which she has used before.

Beth brought some pillowcase samples because the group is preparing to make some on Sew Day on March 7.  She sewed an example of how she made a pillowcase without “the tuck”, but instead have a pieced cuff.

Gaye made a “one hour basket” kit that was just $10.  She says it was fun!  “Stitch Supply Company” is the name of the company and can be found at stitchsupplyco.com. She also showed two February Valentine’s Day-themed items from Laundry Basket Quilts, Edyta Sitar. Gaye is also going to Quiltcon!

Joan said that she is playing with a bag of scraps that she moved, so she is determined to used them.  So far she has enough blocks for four quilt tops!

Micah got a new sewing machine – a Babylock Sashiko.  It’s only one thread and so the product looks like it is handquilted.

Nancy – her bag is made of food bags glued to batting, covered in vinyl and quilted. Filament is offering a $15 workshop in March on how to do it.  She also showed three table runners (see photo below).

Diane is new to quilting – she has two nieces having babies so she is learning quickly!

Cindy shared a Stack and Whack.  She isn’t quite finished with the quilting because she’s having tension trouble on her machine.

Sharon got a new sofa and wanted something very light to have a throw.  Her inspiration came from Evening in the gardenn Quilts, and is made from batiks fabrics from Burkholders.  She was inspired by another member’s back and so made a back for it – that would also make a good front (see photo below)!

Sharon also made an "I Spy" quilt and quilted it herself.  There are 13 different fabrics used on the front. She plans to donate it to the Mennoite Central Committee Relief Sale.

Micah offered the program on the gridded quilting that we were so interested in from her member spotlight last month.

January Member Spotlight

January Member Spotlight

January's spotlight is Maiki who has been quilting for 20 years. She lived in Germany prior to moving to the United States and began her quilting in various groups. Below are a few of her early quilts...

Maiki is usually seen hand stitching at our guild meetings.  She tells us she prefers hand sewing. We believe she is an expert at paper piecing, too, as you can see from her works below...

I think we can all agree that Maiki is an excellent quilter and  artist! Thank you for sharing your quilts with us.

November Meeting Recap

We had an exciting November meeting!  Our freshly quilted Quiltcon charity quilt was revealed, and used as an opportunity to demonstrate the laser method of squaring a quilt.

We held our regular business meeting (minutes can be found here) and then Sonja shared with us holiday card making materials and we all had an opportunity to make a card to take home.

November Meeting Sew and Share

Gay made an Irish chain quilt for her bed using fabrics from Denyse Schmidt.  She says, "You have to put your own stuff into your queue or it never gets made!"

Debbie is proud of her 9th UFO finish this year.  She saw the Batik Stars pattern at a neat Canadian quilt show in 2009 where tea and fresh scones were served at the show! The quilt was made years ago but wasn’t quilted.  It will find a home on her bed.

Donna and Debbie shared what they did in Houston classes.  In the Marie Shell class they learned to make their own fabric designs by piecing strips.

Debbie and Donna also shared the collage pieces designed by Laura Heine of Fiberworks class at the Houston Show.

Donna and Debbie shared "Mouse Trap" by The Hen House made from Cotton and Steel Fabrics.  They purchased the kit at Houston Quilt Festival in 2019!

Donna and Debbie also shared "Small Town" by The Hen House, which was another kit purchased at the Houston Quilt Festival in 2019.  They have been busy this month!

Beth shared blocks that she made in a workshop using Deb Tucker rulers.  Had no interest initially, but it was better than anything else she’s tried in terms of precision piecing.

Cindy shared a table runner that is her last UFO!  It is a pattern she purchased at Old Country Store called Mitered Magic (www.designersworkshop.com) made from cleverly piecing together striped fabric to look like overlapping squares.

Kathy made a jelly roll rug using a modified pattern, and is using it as a mat for her sewing machine.

Lois has a friend who does tye dying, so she gave her some fabric to tye dye.  From the resulting dyed fabric she made a baby quilt (of her own design) and stuffed elephant.

Sigrid made a table runner from the pattern we all got last year.

Joan says, “This project really did me in.”  It is from a pattern called First Snow by Tina Curran.  Met by oohs and aahs from the CAMQG members.  She started it by asking friends if they wanted to do the pattern, and eight took the challenge.  Of the eight, five finished.

Debbie made a baby quilt top from Dear Stella and stash fabrics for a friend’s baby.

She also made a Christmas quilt for her granddaughter (with Merriment by Gingerbear fabric) and then thought she needs to make one for her other granddaughter.  So she went to buy more fabric, which is same fabric line but she bought a different panel so it turned out much differently!

Sonja – made a Necessary Clutch Wallet by Emmaline.

MaryEllen shared a pumpkin table runner she made on a retreat.  She used leftovers from her granddaughter’s quilt to make a mini rug.  She also showed her finished mosaic quilt.  She shared the result of a purse class she took at Old Country Store and also a bag she made at her church quilt class.
