Modern Moment - Modern Quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern Traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.
SEW & SHARE
Karen Sykes shared a t-shirt quilt she is making for a friend from his many shirts collected from participating in running races. She stabilized the t-shirts with a lightweight interfacing and used shirt scraps to make the border. Karen also shared her recently completed quilt, "Wildflower" designed by Rebecca Bryan. Part of her Make Modern Triangles program with Bryan House Quilts. The fabrics were all Kona solids bought at the Old Country Store in Intercourse, PA. Karen created her own color palette for this quilt using the skills and techniques taught by Rebecca Bryan.
Sharon Farley shared a trio of baby quilts. She calls them "Twin Hearts". They were made from the pattern "Our Hearts will go on" by Karen Schindler Bialik from the fabricattic.net. The quilts were made for soon to be twin girls. She had enough fabric and pieces left over to make the third quilt.
Cordell Affeldt shared a collection of bags recently completed. Incorporate into the bags were needlepoint done by Judith Sen. Cordell used the needlepoint as inspiration for improvisational piecing and quilting. They are the perfect size for carrying papers.
Debby Moreland is participating in the Modern Half Square Triangle (HST) Block of the Month 2022 on Instagram with @stephjacobsondesigns and @zanymouse. Her fabrics are batik and she has completed the first two blocks. In addition to HST these blocks also incorporate half rectangle triangles.
Miki Howell showed her quilt "My Favorite Color is Moda". A sampler quilt done in Moda Solids in a tropical getaway colorway.
Donna Fireoved shared some new techniques she is learning. The first was thread painting a portait of her daughter and the second was an inset piecing of a circle. Instructions from Bill Kerr and Weeks Ringle of the Modern Quilt Studio.

Presentation: UFO's by Donna Fireoved
Donna shared a PowerPoint on UFO's (Unfinished Objects) and how they differ from a WIP (Work in Progress). After her thoughtful overview members laid out UFO's and the group offered suggestions on how to fruitfully use what they have started. A marvelous demonstration of the value of community!

Gay Weigand, April Setlick, Christina Miller are all traveling to Quiltcon in Phoenix. We wish them safe travels and look forward to hearing all about the quilt show.
The Executive Committee will meet March 15, 2022 at 6PM in the Community Center room at the GIANT in Camp Hill. Anyone is welcome to attend.
