October 2022 Meeting - What to do with Scraps

October 18, 2022

Modern Moment:

Gay Weigand gave us information on Quiltcon 2023 that will be in Atlanta, Georgia February 23rd to 26th.  As members of the Modern Quilt Guild you can register to attend for free if you complete your registration by November 30th. They offer classes, lectures, vendors and quilts.

Sew and Share:

Members show what they have completed or work in progress. This month they also brought examples of quilts made from scraps. We also added a new feature. Each member was asked a question (or two). This month the questions were- "If you had a quilt shop what would you call it?  and When did you start quilting?"

Sharon showed a sewing machine cover she made using scraps. A pillowcase from the leftovers of a bargello quilt and a table runner she has repurposed into a window covering.

Donna shared her Jack the Pumpkin, pattern by Laura Heine.

Gay shared a quilt top she made using scraps. Star Pop by Quilty Love. She also showed us a bag she made using a quaint novelty print from Ruby Star Society.

Mary Ellen brought a scrappy quilt she made going through her divorce many years ago. She also shared several other quilts made from scraps.

Gina also made a quilt using blocks constructed from crumbs.

Karen recently made a tablemat that she had seen at the Quilted Moose quilt shop, a quilt made from half square triangles and Gertie the Ghost, a pattern by Rebecca Bryan.

Chris showed several scrappy projects as well as a Snowflake quilt that she had seen on Pinterest. Looks great in black/white and red!

Marilyn's scrappy quilt was a watercolor quilt that she added trees, a bow hunter and a deer because her husband loves to hunt.

Member Spotlight:

Miki Howell

She began working with polymer clay and making jewelry. She learned quilting from a traditional quiltmaker while she lived in Europe. She shared an early quilt she made for her mother. She really enjoys making landscape quilts. She takes photographs and they are her inspiration.

Featured Speaker: Leslie Robinson

"What to do with all the %#$@ Scraps!"

Leslie did a great job in helping to identify scraps and different ways to organize and use them. Her own unique idea is to make potholders from scraps that match quilts she makes. She can keep the potholder for herself as a memento of the quilt. There are different methods for storing and organizing your scraps. One particular pattern that is very scrap friendly is the sourdough block

Business Meeting

Dues for 2023 will remain $25.00 and are due by January. The treasurer will be sending out information later this month about making payments either at upcoming meetings, by mail or via paypal.

The December Meeting on December 20th will be our annual holiday gathering. It will be at the Giant Community Center at 6:30pm. We will have a veggie tray, cookie tray and beverages available. We will be doing two different gift exchanges. Participation is optional. The first is the exchange of a Modern Mug Rug. Using a principal of Modern Quilting and the fabric of your choosing make a mug rug (typically sized anywhere from a 4" x 7" to a 12" x 8"). Everyone who brings a mug rug will go home with a different one.
Examples:

We will also have a quilt related gift exchange. Bring a wrapped gift of a quilt related item (value approx $20). We will play a game to distribute the gifts.

In other news, Christina Miller is unable to continue as Communications due to changes to her work schedule. Debbie Lohman has volunteered to take up the post until the position can be filled.

A "Give and Take" Table will be established at meetings so that members can bring quilt items (fabric, patterns, books, blocks, scraps, etc,) that they no longer want in hopes that others might want to take them home. You must reclaim your items before you leave if they don't find a new home.

Next Month: Our presenter is Debbie Lohman who will be speaking about threads. Our members spotlight will be Karen Sykes.

Signups for 2023 spotlight and presentations are available now so plan to sign up at the next meeting to get your preferred month!
