Sharon was our member spotlight tonight. She shared her quilting journey and all her beautifully made quilts, many of which she gave as gifts.

March Meeting

March 15, 2022

 

Modern Moment: Gay and Christina shared their experiences from QuiltCon which was held in Phoenix Arizona this year. Remember that from now until March 31st you can virtually attend Quiltcon 2022 and see all 575 quilts. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at quiltcon.com Many quilts have a recorded statement from the artist about their creative process. QuiltCon 2023 will be held in Atlanta Georgia and QuiltCon 2024 will be held in Raleigh North Carolina so keep it in mind since they are both on the east coast!

 

Sew & Share

 Debra Lohman shared a pinterest inspired baby quilt for a baby names Paris. Fabric is Midsommer Meadow by Riley Blake.

 

 She also shared this super bold and fun piece she calls "Space Invaders"

Leslie Robinson shared a quilt top using up her scraps leftover from a charity quilt project made by her quilters group Wellness Farm Stitchers for Quilts Beyond Borders. She also shared another scrap project, an iSpy quilt!

Gay shared a happy and colorful quilt using Tula Pink fabric. Pattern is The Hazel Quilt by Kitchen Table Quilting. Great choice of binding! She also shared her court house steps quilt top using fabric scraps.

 

 Maike shared her finished quilt after showing us the quilt top a few meetings ago. She wasn't crazy about the look of this quilt but the crowd agreed.. its gorgeous!

 

Karen shared her log cabin block she calls Resist and Hope using the colors of Ukraine and the national flower: the sunflower. Sewing can be a great calming and therapeutic part of our lives.

Christina shared her first foundation paper piecing project made in her QuiltCon workshop. It will be a pillow cover!

Donna shared this beauty. An incredibly detailed art quilt using a combination of cotton fabric and wool.

And a super stylish quilt coat was spotted at this meeting!

Presentation this meeting was done by Maike! She did a fantastic job explaining and showing different hand piecing and grid piecing methods. So good I forgot to take a picture! Her work has a beautiful preciseness, very inspiring!

February 2022 Meeting

Modern Moment - Modern Quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern Traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.

SEW & SHARE

Karen Sykes shared a t-shirt quilt she is making for a friend from his many shirts collected from participating in running races. She stabilized the t-shirts with a lightweight interfacing and used shirt scraps to make the border.  Karen also shared her recently completed quilt, "Wildflower" designed by Rebecca Bryan. Part of her Make Modern Triangles program with Bryan House Quilts.  The fabrics were all Kona solids bought at the Old Country Store in Intercourse, PA.  Karen created her own color palette for this quilt using the skills and techniques taught by Rebecca Bryan.

Sharon Farley shared a trio of baby quilts. She calls them "Twin Hearts".  They were made from the pattern "Our Hearts will go on" by Karen Schindler Bialik from the fabricattic.net. The quilts were made for soon to be twin girls. She had enough fabric and pieces left over to make the third quilt. 

Cordell Affeldt shared a collection of bags recently completed. Incorporate into the bags were needlepoint done by Judith Sen. Cordell used the needlepoint as inspiration for improvisational piecing and quilting. They are the perfect size for carrying papers.

Debby Moreland is participating in the Modern Half Square Triangle (HST) Block of the Month 2022 on Instagram with @stephjacobsondesigns and @zanymouse.  Her fabrics are batik and she has completed the first two blocks.  In addition to HST these blocks also incorporate half rectangle triangles. 

Miki Howell showed her quilt "My Favorite Color is Moda". A sampler quilt done in Moda Solids in a tropical getaway colorway. 

Donna Fireoved shared some new techniques she is learning. The first was thread painting a portait of her daughter and the second was an inset piecing of a circle. Instructions from  Bill Kerr and Weeks Ringle of the Modern Quilt Studio.

Presentation: UFO's by Donna Fireoved

Donna shared a PowerPoint on UFO's (Unfinished Objects) and how they differ from a WIP (Work in Progress). After her thoughtful overview members laid out UFO's and the group offered suggestions on how to fruitfully use what they have started. A marvelous demonstration of the value of community!

Gay Weigand, April Setlick, Christina Miller are all traveling to Quiltcon in Phoenix. We wish them safe travels and look forward to hearing all about the quilt show.

The Executive Committee will meet March 15, 2022 at 6PM in the Community Center room at the GIANT in Camp Hill.  Anyone is welcome to attend.

January 2022 Meeting

January 18, 2022  It's a brand new year. The weather cooperated and we met in person at the Community Room at the GIANT food store in Camp Hill.  

The 2022 Guild year is officially begun. Leaders for this year are Donna Lohman and Gay Weigand. Communications is Christina Miller, Treasurer is Debra Lohman, Secretary is Cordell Affeldt, and Charity Coordinator is Kyla Somerville.

Debbie Lohman began the meeting with a Modern Minute "What is Modern Quilting" powerpoint presentation on the history of modern quilting. 

Sew and Share:

Gay Weigand share a recent quilt she completed. It was a free pattern from Sew Kind of Wonderful website.The fabric was Moda Grunge.

Mary Ellen Wical recently completed this Sewing Machine Sampler wallhanging and a large quilt "Little Houses" made from house quilt blocks that were given to her by members of the Carlisle Letort Quilters Guild for her serving as president of that guild.

Debbie and Donna Lohman shared a top they recently completed "Duck, Duck, Goose" Block of the Month Pattern by Maegs and Me and fabric Blue Goose by Clothworks. They also made matching throw quilts for Donna's son and spouse. Inspired by a photo on pinterest the quilts are flannel sewn with 1/2" seams instead of 1/4" seams and backed with fleece blankets purchased at Kohl's!

Maike Beu showed her progress on a hand pieced wallhanging top. The fabrics were stamped with the sewing and cutting lines using a clear acrylic stamp she had purchased in Germany. The fabrics were all from her stash.

Amy Barrick is participating in the 2018 Stitch-a-long Rose of Kaleigh. She shared her work in progress. Fabric is Ava Rose by Riley Blake. It is all made by English Paper Piecing.

Karen Sykes shared a table runner (or wallhanging, you decide). It was quick and easy to put together and she is planning to make some to sell at her neighborhood craft sale later this year.

Featured Presentation

Presentation Sharon Farley, Leslie Robinson and Laura Karlson shared a special project they are involved in. They are part of a team of women who make kits for girls in women in impoverished areas who need reusable products for their monthly menses. They are part of the organization called Days for Girls. The program wants to give girls the opportunity to go to school all month instead of being forced to stay home because they had no way of dealing with their periods. 

They showed everyone what was included in the kit and handed out a flyer of what items could be donated. They can used flannel and cotton fabrics (pretty, darker prints, flowers, geometric designs); 5/8" wide ribbon, polyester thread, girls briefs sizes 10,12 and 14 (not white); washcloths (thin too dry easily) and soap (hotel size)
