Spring Challenge - Using Batiks

Each participating member brought a yard of Batik fabric to share. We got into small groups and began ripping our fabric in half to share with the member next to us.  This continued until we were holding a tiny piece of fabric. The guidelines for the challenge were to use the Batiks and only 1 other fabric. It's amazing to see all the different designs. Here are the results:

Here are some pictures of what our members have been creating this summer. Also, members please remember to email pictures of what you are working on so we can post them here.

Gay created this Meadowland Quilt by Jinny Beyer using Then Came June fabrics.

MaryEllen created this small quilt from Halfmoon Handwerks, titled, The Quilter's Trek.

She has also been busy working on Tumblers from a kit.

Cordell put together this lovely tote from her leftovers. She used heavier batting and did vertical quilting using her walking foot.

Joan created a modified version of a pattern by Caroline Reardon called "Pile O' Leaves."

Melanie created this gender neutral baby quilt.  It is two-sided, she discovered some quilt blocks from a class she took in Houston when she was looking through her stash for backing fabric. She was able to make the back more fun than she originally planned.

Summer Happenings

What a spring and summer! Our face to face spring meetings were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shutdown across Pennsylvania.

June

We began zooming our meetings in June. During our June meeting, Melanie helped many of us acclimate to this new venue. Karen asked each of those members present to share their most exciting event during the pandemic.

July

During our July meeting, Janelle Wertzberger shared a wonderful presentation with us about Batiks. She took us on a virtual trip to Bali where she traveled as a member of a musical ensemble from Gettysburg College. While she was there she created an original Batik. She shared the process with us during her presentation.

Following the presentation we had a brief Show and Tell.

At our Zoom meeting, Cordell gave a fabulous presentation on Non-critical Critique and Debby M shared her technique for invisible binding.

February 2020

Cordell brought a jacket she sewed with elephant batik fabric a friend brought from Tanzania.  She brought it because she quilted it, and that qualified it as a quilted item.

The jacket is made from Butterick pattern 6293, which she has used before.  

Beth brought some pillowcase samples because the group is preparing to make some on Sew Day on March 7.  She sewed an example of how she made a pillowcase without “the tuck”, but instead have a pieced cuff.

Gaye made a “one hour basket” kit that was just $10.  She says it was fun!  “Stitch Supply Company” is the name of the company and can be found at stitchsupplyco.com. She also showed two February Valentine’s Day-themed items from Laundry Basket Quilts, Edyta Sitar. Gaye is also going to Quiltcon!

 Joan said that she is playing with a bag of scraps that she moved, so she is determined to used them.  So far she has enough blocks for four quilt tops!

Micah got a new sewing machine – a Babylock Sashiko.  It’s only one thread and so the product looks like it is handquilted. 

 Nancy – her bag is made of food bags glued to batting, covered in vinyl and quilted. Filament is offering a $15 workshop in March on how to do it.  She also showed three table runners (see photo below).

 Diane is new to quilting – she has two nieces having babies so she is learning quickly!

Cindy shared a Stack and Whack.  She isn’t quite finished with the quilting because she’s having tension trouble on her machine.

Sharon got a new sofa and wanted something very light to have a throw.  Her inspiration came from Evening in the gardenn Quilts, and is made from batiks fabrics from Burkholders.  She was inspired by another member’s back and so made a back for it – that would also make a good front (see photo below)!  

Sharon also made an "I Spy" quilt and quilted it herself.  There are 13 different fabrics used on the front.She plans to donate it to the Mennoite Central Committee Relief Sale.

Micah offered the program on the gridded quilting that we were so interested in from her member spotlight last month.

January Member Spotlight

January's spotlight is Maiki who has been quilting for 20 years. She lived in Germany prior to moving to the United States and began her quilting in various groups. Below are a few of her early quilts...

 

 

Maiki is usually seen hand stitching at our guild meetings.  She tells us she prefers hand sewing. We believe she is an expert at paper piecing, too, as you can see from her works below...

 

 

 

I think we can all agree that Maiki is an excellent quilter and  artist! Thank you for sharing your quilts with us.

Elise began the evening sharing her Block of the Month from Quiltworks in Tunkhanneck,PA which is now closed.

Leslie shared a feminine hygiene kit from a workshop she participated in for Days for Girls earlier this month. Sharon coordinates the program in our area. If you are interested in attending, their next meeting is February, 7, 2020 from 11-3 at the Lemoyne Community Center, 510 Hermann Ave. Lemoyne, PA. Doors to the room are located in the back. Please bring a lunch and your sewing machine.

Debby took the 2 charm packs she received our holiday party and sewed this patchwork lap quilt. The fabric is Woven from Moda. She also shared a couple of quilt alongs being offered on Instagram: #MoreModernHSTBOM by @Stephjacobsondesigns and@zanymouse are sponsoring one and #scrapsnapquiltalong from www.quiltsforthemaking.com is the second.

 

Sonja shared several pieces she entered into the Farm Show earlier this month. She won second place for her greeting card and third place for her place mat . The table runner was created at her church.

 

Beth shared several blocks she is working on to help bust her stash of Cotton and Steel Basic fabrics.The pattern is titled Traffic Jam and is free on Pat Sloan's website.

Nancy shared this 1 Block Wonder quilt she completed. She also used an app, WonderDesign helper to put it together.

Melanie is using her scraps to create this modern quilt top.

Lois shared a quilt she made for her grandson inspired by an astronomy chart, titled the Science Lesson designed by Sylvia Schaefer. The design is based on the Hertzsprung- Russell -diagram.

She also created a couple of bags.

Sigrid made this lovely Shoreline Shoulder Bag from on of her favorite sites, 

dogundermydesk.com.

Dawn also,used the fabric she got at our Holiday party to create this pattern which she found in a magazine.

Amy has been taking a few workshops at  Half Moon Handwerks in New Cumberland and shared her projects with us. Here is one of her pieces using traditional block printing with teak wood blocks.

Karen made two quilts for her grandchildren using "Moon Dance" a postcard type pattern available at Half Moon Handwerks in New Cumberland. 

 

And finally, here is our Charity quilt for this year's QuiltCon. Thanks to Debbie and Beth for designing it and everyone who helped with the letters, binding and sewing.

Our program this evening was our first challenge titled, Snip and Rip using Batik fabrics. The challenge quilts will be due at our May meeting.
