September 2024 - Challenge Reveal

September 2024

Tonight was the big reveal on our negative space challenge quilts.

One of the defining traits of The Modern Quilter is the use of negative space in a quilt. The Modern Quilter often uses large expanses of negative space, or space in a single color, around other pieced or appliqued areas. This negative space is often heavily quilted adding to the design of the quilt. Large segments of negative space can add weight and focus to the design area of the piece, drawing you in and allowing the positive space (the object in the quilt or design space) to be the focus. - The Quilt Show

Every member who finished their challenge quilt was entered in a drawing for a gift card to Halfmoon Handwerks in New Cumberland, PA. Congratulations to Chelsea and Karen D.

Chelsea chose colors to contrast with her gray background with repeated block patterns in different sizes finishing off with straight line quilting.

Sharon enlarged a pattern by adding negative space and used colors to match a gifted pillow

PRESENTATION

Pappus House Quilts - By Leslie Robinson

Pappus House is a social/community end-of life home located in York, Pennsylvania.  Individuals who are on hospice care can come and live at Pappus House and receive attention and care just as if they were at home from a myriad of volunteers. It's the only home in York County that provided supportive care exclusively to people in their final months of life. Their original house had three rooms, they recently moved and just last month received certification to have 8 rooms. Local quilt guilds, including CAMQG made quilts for them to use. A local group, The Wellness Farm Stitchers also made a shroud for the facility. They use it to cover the deceased until they leave the house.  They incorporated doilies, handkerchiefs and anything white on white they could find from their stashes.

Challenge Quilt Update

The polaroid blocks have been turned in and Chelsea already has many of them trimmed so they are "wonky".
They will be sewn together to make a quilt (possibly two) for the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, PA.
