November Review

We were fortunate to have Joan Marr introduce us to her program titled "Ties-Some Things New from Some Things Old."  She demonstrated how to take old men's ties and make them into purses.  In this day and age of the work place becoming more casual, and people desiring to up-cycle their wears, this was a great use of fabric.

She really did a great job of taking your mind to look at the ties differently.  Here you can see where the tip of the tie is used as the purse clasp.  We all have lost earrings before.  Here she used the sole survivor earring as a clasp.  Again, another great up-cycle.

We were also treated to a review of some of her amazing quilts.  Joan has lived in many amazing places where she has been able to connect with the local culture.

Thank you Joan for your time and sharing some of your beautiful and inspiring quilts.

Rainbows and a Fabric Challenge

Here's What CAMQG Has Been Up To!

Our bottled rainbow blocks are coming back, and they look amazing! Participants took home a variety of scraps, a kona solid, and used a quilt as you go technique based on this Quilt Along.

Once they are all done, they will be pieced into a quilt which will be donated to a charity auction for Caitlin's Smiles , a local group which works to bring smiles to children with chronic or life-threatening conditions through arts and crafts activities. How fantastic is that?

March Updates

Here's What CAMQG Has Been Up To!

There was a great turnout at the 2014 Gathering of the Guilds event at the end of February! Our members demonstrated improv pieceing and showed of some spectacular examples of member's modern quilts.

What's Coming up?
  • Meeting: Tuesday, March 18th
Members chose the Bottled Rainbows Quilt for our next group sewing project at our last meeting! If you haven't seen one before, check out the original version by Rachel from Stitched in Colors . Careful, you will most certainly be drooling over the rainbow goodness once you head over to the quilt along page!!

Members who would like to participate should bring a small sandwich bag of scraps to our March 18th meeting. If you are spending anytime with your stash or scraps this weekend, here's a chance to scrap bust! It's kind of like spring cleaning, but this is way more fun :) Rachel has a great set of tips to pick good scraps here. We will do a quick sort by color at the meeting then send everyone home with some yummy scraps and the coordinating Kona solid. There the magic begins, everyone will work on their blocks and bring them back to the April meeting.

This is a great way to try a new technique without committing to big project. Bonus: the final quilt will go to a special organization or charity in the Capital Area.  Awesome, right?

  • Sewing Day: Saturday, March 29th (tentative date) Open sew days are a perfect time to make progress on WIPs and finish those UFOs.

Happy Quilting!

February Events and Updates

Hello everyone!

February is here, and with it are some exciting events for CAMQG!

Here's What Been Up To!

  • The Capital Area Modern Quilt Guild is officially a member of the national Modern Quilt Guild Organization. If you haven’t already done so, check out their great website.

  •  CAMQG successfully left a modern mark on the PA Farm Show in January. Our finished quilt top was on display in the Family Living section where visitors were able to view the top and give hand quilting a try.  The non-traditional colors and pattern were a successful conversation starter, too!

  • Our January 25th meeting was held in the classroom space at Smile Spinners, in Marysville, PA. Guild members participated in a ‘Photo Inspiration challenge’. Each person brought 3 fat quarters that were inspired by a photo of a flower. They were then tasked with sewing a block of their choice, with somebody else’s fabric. It was fun to see everyone’s creative process and resulting blocks. Thank you all who participated!

What's Coming up?
  • Meeting : Tuesday, February 18th
  • Gathering of the Guilds: Saturday, February 22nd (9 am - 4 pm) –Swatara Church of God, 4860 Lindle Road, Harrisburg PA.
Gathering of the Guilds is a great opportunity for the public to meet with and learn about various fiber and needlework-related guilds in Central PA.
CAMQG members will have several modern quilts on display and will be providing a demo of improvisational piecing!  “Cost of admission” is a canned good. Hope to see you there
  • Meeting: Tuesday, March 18th
